John Bunyan

John Bunyan (1628–1688), a tinker's son from Elstow near Bedford, fought in the Civil War and became a Nonconformist preacher. Jailed for over twelve years for preaching without a licence, he wrote The Pilgrim's Progress, one of the most widely read books in English.
