Harriet Beecher Stowe (1811–1896) was born in Litchfield, Connecticut, and moved to Cincinnati in 1832, when her father became head of Lane Theological Seminary. There she married Calvin Stowe, raised her children, and saw slavery across the Ohio River in Kentucky, and the people who fled it. She wrote Uncle Tom's Cabin in Brunswick, Maine, soon after leaving Ohio, and later lived in Hartford, next door to Mark Twain.
