## Description

Written in his last year, while dying of throat cancer, to keep his family out of debt: Ulysses S. Grant's memoirs follow him from a tanner's son in Georgetown, Ohio, through West Point and the Mexican War to command of the Union armies and Appomattox. Plain, clear and modest, they were published by Mark Twain's company, became a huge bestseller, and are still counted among the finest military memoirs ever written.
