# Zane Grey

Zane Grey (1872–1939) was born Pearl Zane Gray in Zanesville, Ohio, a town founded by his mother's family, the Zanes, settlers of the Ohio Valley frontier. He played baseball at the University of Pennsylvania and practiced dentistry in New York before his first books, about his own ancestors, found readers. He became the bestselling writer of westerns of his time, with Riders of the Purple Sage, and more than a hundred films were made from his stories.
