# Ulysses S. Grant

Ulysses S. Grant (1822–1885) was born in Point Pleasant, Ohio, and grew up in Georgetown, in Brown County, where his father ran a tannery. After West Point and the Mexican War he left the army, struggled at farming and business, and was working in his family's leather store in Galena, Illinois, when the Civil War began. He became the Union's leading general and, from 1869 to 1877, the 18th president.
